The historic town, at the northern tip of Long Beach Island, with its iconic lighthouse overseeing challenging Barnegat Inlet, a network of impressive sand dunes fronting the Atlantic Ocean running south from the stone jetty and a harbor facing Barnegat Bay to the west. The bay front area is anchored by an active fishing industry centered on ancient Viking Village. Scattered around throughout the streets are a cluster of storm-defying 19th century Victorian homes and public buildings as well as a Community Garden.
