The second map begins with historic Edisto Island and proceeds past Kiawah, St. Johns, St. James and Seabrook Islands ending at the beautiful Isle of Palms. Midway along this stretch of coast is iconic Charleston Harbor fed by the Ashley, Cooper and Wando Rivers, framing the venerable town and all its historic features including the Battery, Lighthouse, and Fort Sumter, site of the first shots fired of the Civil War. Upland, there is the broad greenspace of the Ace Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve and a network of railroad lines delineating an earlier important mode of travel to this central location.
