CORONA MAP

I rarely write blogs about my own specific map productions but I’m so excited about what I’ve been doing during this sheltering-at-home time that I’m making an exception. I took the opportunity to re-visit some older maps that I had done and which I always felt could somehow have turned out better (different is better?) and I started re-working them. The first result is of the Eastern End of Long Island, NY, both the north and south forks, and a place that has recently seen a lot of visitors way ahead of their traditional summertime jaunts. I had previously done this area from Riverhead out to Montauk in 2 maps. And I thought that it was a little jarring to consider this iconic piece of land in any other way than how most people think of it, that being one place “out east”. In the 15 years that have passed since I last worked on these locations, much more development has occurred. So, I put them together, re-drew and re-colored them completely and gave more emphasis and clarity to areas that were a little “muddy” in the previous version. Maybe it’s not a great idea to critique my own results, but I’m so happy with the outcome of this re-work, coupled with the fact that it has really helped me mentally deal with the whole pandemic situation by allowing a focus on something positive and cathartic, that I wanted to clearly express why this particular map has been so satisfying and made me so happy. That’s it. I hope you’ll all take a look and see that it is visually stimulating and different than some of my other pieces. As long as we all have to stay in place, there could be more re-works coming. Stay safe and well.
